An electronic but hearty welcome to the College of Liberal Arts. Despite ongoing budgetary uncertainties, I want to assure you that your college continues to make remarkable strides in our teaching and in our closely related research missions. This year and last, the College of Liberal Arts continued to cement its reputation as certainly one of the very finest on the UNLV campus. For 2008 and 2009, College faculty won almost all of the university-wide awards in advising, teaching, and research, and captured several system-wide awards, including last year's Harry Reid Silver State Research Award (Christopher Kearney, psychology) as well as this year’s Reid Award (Eugene Moehring, history). Over the last two years, as well, we have managed to recruit excellent new faculty to the college, including this year a full professor in Native American history and two distinguished full professors: one supported by a stipend provided by philanthropic sources, a professor in post-colonial literary studies, and another in the area of urban history. Our programs are growing in their national reputations such that we can recruit, when we have the budgets, faculty among the very best in the United States, which bolsters the excellence already present on our campus. By just about every "matrix," the College of Liberal Arts is doing extremely well in its responsibilities to both its undergraduate and graduate students and to its faculty researchers. Finally, we are very excited about our rapidly expanding and prospering new College of Liberal Arts Alumni Association. Again, welcome -- and come see us!
